By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Santa Familia Grains, Vegetables and Legumes Co-operative (Santa Familia GVL) on Tuesday received a 19-horsepower rototiller under the project ‘Cooperatives’ Rapid Response to COVID 19 and the 2020 Floods in Belize’ project.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security & Enterprise (MAFSE), in late 2020, the Department of Co-operatives conceived the project as a partnership with the Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology (BEST). The objective was to develop a national project proposal to access grant funding for eleven registered co-operatives from low-income rural communities.
The rototiller is valued at Bz$15,620. Under the project specifications, procurement was undertaken by BEST and at the handing over an agreement conveying ownership of the machine to the co-operative was signed. The agreement includes a number of clauses on their obligations to maintain it. The Acting Managing Director of BEST and the Chairman of the cooperative signed the agreement. MAFSE Chief Executive Officer Sevulo Baeza signed as witness.
“This project, which is financed by the UNDP Global Environment Fund/Small Grants Program was designed to assist Co-operatives in making investment to enable their members to adapt and be more resilient to climate change,” said MAFSE.
Also present at the handing over ceremony were Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo, the Acting Managing Director from the Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology Michelle Longsworth, the National Coordinator at GEF Small Grants Program UNDP Leonel Requena, the Chairman and members of the Santa Familia Grains, Vegetables and Legumes Cooperative, along with personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Cooperatives Department.
