By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Ukraine is commemorating its anniversary of Independence amidst Russia’s invasion of the country.

While public celebrations were canceled, Ukranians celebrated wearing embroidered shirts typical of the national dress.

Many leaders have joined in extending their solidarity to the Ukrainian people as they continue to fight for their country.

“To our Ukrainian friends: This Independence Day, know that our support for you remains steadfast. While our two countries are thousands of kilometers from each other, Canadians and Ukrainians share a strong connection – and we’ll always be here for you,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted to Twitter.

“Today, I congratulate the people of Ukraine on their Independence Day. The Ukrainian people have inspired the world with their courage and dedication to freedom. We are committed to continuing to support them as they defend their sovereignty and their democracy,” U.S. President Joe Biden said.

The United States Embassy in Belize also joined in standing with Ukraine.

“Today, on their National Day, the Ukrainian people are fighting valiantly to defend themselves against Russia’s brutal war of aggression. #WeStandWithUkraine for freedom, sovereignty, and humanity,” the embassy said.
