Conservation group calls on Belizeans to “save the reef” by opposing Port of Belize cruise port expansion project

Posted: Thursday, August 25, 2022. 10:01 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Belize Marine Life, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the country’s marine resources is urging Belizeans to take a stand for the barrier reef by signing its “Save Our Reef” petition, geared towards opposing the Port of Belize’s planned cruise port expansion.

The organization is calling on all those concerned for the safety of the reef to sign the petition before the deadline, August 31.

Belize Marine Life says the major issue with the project is the plan to dump 7.5 million cubic meters of toxic dredged material into our oceans, which will adversely affect not only the reef, but atolls, and the fishing industry.

“Let the government of Belize know that concerned citizens do not think it is acceptable to proceed with any project that has the potential to be of huge detriment to our natural environment,” the organization said.

Those wishing to lend their support can sign the petition physically at either 88 Shopping Center of the Yarborough (Yabra) Bridge in Belize City.

Those wanting to sign the petition online can do so here.
