By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan plans to begin deploying drone defense systems in 2023, Reuters report.
The island’s defence ministry said that it would deploy drone defence systems after a video emerged of Taiwanese soldiers throwing stones at a Chinese done that was at a guard post near China’s coast.
Authorities say the incident occurred on August 16 and confirmed that soldiers had thrown stones at the drone.
Taiwan has reported incidents of repeated Chinese drone incursions near its offshore islands especially as China conducted military drills following the high-profile visit of U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has boosted military and political pressure.
Despite China’s acts of “provocation”, Taiwan says that only the country’s 23 million people can decide their future.
“Officers and soldiers at all levels will continue to implement vigilance in accordance with the principle of “not escalating conflicts or causing disputes,” the statement from Taiwan’s Defence Ministry added.
