By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is that there have been 45, 535 cases of Monkeypox in 98 countries.

The United States has reported 16,602 cases of the viral disease. Mexico has reported 385 cases, Guatemala- 4 cases and Honduras has 3 cases.

Studies show that the virus can be transmitted in 3 ways, through direct contact with an infected person’s skin rash; by respiratory droplets spread when someone coughs or sneezes, and by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.

Experts say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.

However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that health officials in all countries should be on the alert for signals related to people presenting with a rash that may be associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain, and muscle aches.
