By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, August 25, 2022, the United States Government announced that it will suspend 26 China-bound flights from the U.S. by 4 Chinese carriers, Reuters report.
The decision comes after the Chinese government suspended some U.S. carrier flights over COVID-19 cases.
According to the report, this will affect flights by Xiamen, Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines from Sept. 5 to Sept. 28.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) noted the cancellation of 26 American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines flights over COVID-19 cases.
A spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in Washington said that the decision to suspend the China-bound flights was “extremely irresponsible.”
U.S. authorities noted that as of August 7, Chinese authorities revised their policies so if the number of passengers on a flight to China testing positive for COVID-19 reached 4% of the total, 1 flight would be suspended. If it reached 8%, 2 flights would be suspended.
