By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Mexican-funded Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life) project is getting off the ground in Orange Walk.

Over the last two days (August 24-25) the initial stages got underway with the registration of farmers.

“Farmers from rural areas of Orange Walk registered in the pilot phase of the Sembrando Vida project, undertaken by the Mexican Government through AMEXCID, the Agencia Mexicana de Cooperacion Internacional para el Desarollo or Mexican International Cooperation Agency for Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise of Belize,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

The Sembrando Vida project is the brainchild of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The project will offer support to 2,000 rural farmers throughout the country of Belize.

“Belize’s participation in Sembrando Vida is part of the commitment made by President Manuel Lopez Obrador during his recent visit to Belize,” said MAFSE.

The programme is also being carried out in other Central American countries like El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

With the launching of the pilot phase of registration in Orange Walk, the program will soon begin to roll out in other districts.

“The project will also include hiring extension officers to work with the beneficiary farmers to offer help with crops, planting, biofertilizer production, and bio-forestry,” said MAFSE.

The Agriculture Ministry said that Sembrando Vida will provide economic assistance, tools, seeds, fertilizer and technical assistance to the farmers selected. The objective is to assist farmers from vulnerable areas of the country to produce their own food, earn income by selling any surplus, become self-sustaining and contribute to greater food security.
