Rodwell Ferguson on allegations of corruption with Guatemalan bus line: “No comment”

Posted: Friday, August 26, 2022. 4:42 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of Youth, Sports and Transport, Rodwell Ferguson, has no further comments on allegations of corruption being made against him with respect to agreements made with Guatemalan bus operators.

The allegations come by way of a report called “A Sequence of Events” being circulated through means such as Whatsapp, which make allegations that could be actionable if repeated. Nonetheless, someone took the time and effort to prepare and disseminate the report, so the media pressed Ferguson on the issue following the meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, but Ferguson declined to comment on the matter.

Ferguson addressed the issue via a Facebook post earlier this week, noting that back in July, he along with his Chief Executive Officer, Chief Transport Officer and a representative of the Belize Tourism Board headed, by road, to Guatemala to meet with the owner of Fuente del Norte bus company. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the company getting back its old runs to Belize.

Ferguson stressed that he did not make any compromising agreements and said that for any agreement to be struck, Belizean bus operators must also be given access to the Guatemalan market.

“I maintained my position, if we cannot go into Guatemala then they will not be able to come into Belize unless cabinet decides otherwise,” Ferguson said.

He dismissed the report as “mischief” and challenged whoever produced it to release the evidence they have to prove any wrongdoing on his part.
