By Benjamin Flowers: The new building for Calcutta Government School in the Corozal District, has finally been completed.
The Social Investment Fund awarded the contract to LV & Sons Construction Ltd in March 2021, for a negotiated price of $ 1,299,450.00. While the actual construction for the building began on May 17, 2021, groundbreaking for the project was held on May 7.
The school’s administration said that they had been requesting a new building for the school for approximately 10 years.
The new building is a two-storey facility made of reinforced concrete, that comes with five classrooms, a computer room, a library, office space, kitchenette, four male and female bathroom areas, storage spaces, and an access ramp to accommodate users with disabilities.
“The structure will also be equipped with a verandah and esplanade, reinforced concrete floor and roof systems, masonry block walls, galvanized aluminum louvered windows, security grilles, and timber doors,” SIF explained. “The contract also includes for the construction of a Pre-primary classroom, which shall form a part of the structure. The pre-primary classroom shall be equipped with restroom facilities for students and teachers and storage facilities.”
Works also included the construction of a chain link perimeter fence, walkways, and for the provision of site drainage.
