By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 26, 2022, Canadian Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Mary Ng met virtually with Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration, and Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Finance, Economic Development and Investment.
Ng highlighted Canada’s long-standing partnership with Belize and reiterated the Government of Canada’s commitment to advancing shared priorities on issues such as climate change, helping small businesses grow and become exporters, and women’s entrepreneurship, a statement by the Government of Canada said.
In addition, Ng discussed Canada’s understanding of the economic and climate vulnerabilities of small coastal states and the need for access to innovative financing options to ensure countries can take the necessary steps to mitigate and adapt to climate change and continue development.
Both ministers reiterated their commitment to exploring avenues to strengthen the trade and investment relationship between Canada and Belize and to continuing to support open and rules-based international trade.
“Canada is supportive of the current technical assessment by the World Bank of Belize’s eligibility for International Development Association concessional financing,” the statement said.
