Ms. Mahogany Heights Pageant being held tonight

Posted: Saturday, August 27, 2022. 8:12 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Tonight, eight young women will be competing for the title of Ms. Mahogany Heights.

The event is being held at the St. Agnes School compound in the village and is the culmination of months of work for the contestants and organizing committee. Contestants in the pageant will not only be representing themselves but were each designated a social or cultural icon whom they would portray as the contest unfolds.

The contestants are Kayla Eans, Jessica Bahadur, Rheanna Gray, Alvina Martinez, Giselle Edwards, Vasheena Murillo, Christine Perez, and Shevana Galvez.

Sherlette Gamboa, the pageant organizer, explained that the pageant is geared towards changing the narrative about the village, which has been leaning towards it being an unsafe community due to a recent spike in violent crime.

“We decided to spin this negative into a positive, and show the society that we do have more negative coming out of the village than positive.”

Gamboa said that all the contestants were pageant novices, but she hopes that they will use the knowledge and skills gained competing in the pageant as a stepping stone to competing for greater titles such as Queen of the Bay and Ms. Universe.

Breaking Belize News wishes each contestant well, and reminds them that they are all winners for having made the attempt.
