Date of comments on revised EIA for Waterloo project extended to September 14

By Aaron Humes: A public consultation meeting on the review of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the “Port of Belize Cruise Tourism Facility and Cargo Expansion” will be held on September 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel.

The deadline for the submission of written comments on the review of the revised EIA on the project to the Department of the Environment (DOE) in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, has been extended to September 14, as it was announced today.

Members of the public can place their written comments in the public comment box at the September 1 meeting, and/or can submit written comments using the below URL or via postal mail using the provided contact information herein

The proposed project, which would expand cargo services at the beleaguered Port operation as well as create a shore-side docking facility, promises thousands of jobs and meaningful economic opportunity according to its developers but has attracted significant criticism for its impact on the environment as well as those behind it.

A previous version of the EIA was rejected by the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) last December, prompting Waterloo to allege corruption among its members.
