Minister of Health confirms agreement with Nurses’ Association; says protests “had been coming”

Posted: Monday, August 29, 2022. 4:13 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard says that he does not hold it against nurses that they walked out today after seeing the deductions from their pay and amid frustration with issues of working conditions.

Despite being “caught off guard” by the walk-outs, the Minister revealed that negotiations had been ongoing with the Nursing Association of Belize.

Short-hour deductions for the month of August have been rolled back and the amounts will be repaid as advances in September; overtime sheets will also be recalculated to reflect the proper figures.

The Minister has further committed to meet directly with nurses in the south where the walkouts started, followed by the administrative team.

Minister Bernard also acknowledged that due to issues with a particular supplier, there has been a delay in the re-supplying of critical medications and stores which is also being addressed.
