By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Sixteen youths from San Pedro Columbia, Toledo District learned how to make bio-inputs to reduce the use of pesticides, according to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
The young men and women from the Zion Youth Group, who are already involved in agriculture, attended a hands-on training session on Bio-inputs last week.
“The objective of the training was to promote Climate Smart Agriculture Practices, in making bio-inputs to reduce the use of pesticides by introducing bio-fertilizers,” said MAFSE.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that through its assistance programs, its extension officers in collaboration with the extension officers of the Resilient Rural Belize program continue engaging farmers and youths around the country in these types of training so they have alternative ways to overcome the soaring prices of agricultural inputs.
“The hands-on training focused on the process of making organic pesticides, bio-insecticide to control leaf eaters, bio-fungicide, bio- ant controller and ‘madre de cacao’ bio-fertilizer. The products elaborated were glass water (bio-insecticide), sodium bicarbonate-based broth (bio-insecticide) and Madrifol (foliar fertilizer).”
MAFSE said the bio-inputs training was conducted by Resilient Rural Belize Extension Officer Alberto Chacon along with MAFSE Extension Officer Adrian Mendoza.
