By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s crackdown on gangs in the country has garnered high public support.
Last month, the President announced that the country is building a mega-prison with space for 40,000 gang members, Bloomberg reports.
President Bukele said that the Terrorism Confinement Center was already under construction.
In March, the country declared a state of emergency that has been extended since then. The State of Emergency grants special powers to the Government by easing arrest rules following violent crimes by gangs.
Since it commenced, over 50,000 people have been detained.
And while human rights groups continue to call out Bukele, surveys showed that the crackdown on gangs is supported by the majority of residents.
