By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man charged with shoplifting this week told the court he had bigger problems and was begging for help.
Sandhill resident, 55-year-old Nelson Lockwood, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, answering to a single charge of theft in relation to a $68 box of chocolates stolen from U-Mall Supermarket inLadyville.
In court, Lockwood pleaded guilty and told the court he would like to be sent to prison so he can participate in a rehabilitation program because he is addicted to drugs. He stressed that he wants to change his life, but that he needs support in doing so, and that rehab is the best place for him.
The Magistrate imposed a fine of 4500 plus $5 cost of court which Lockwood must pay by November 30. During his hearing, it was revealed that Lockwood owes the court $1,005 for a state of emergency violation he picked up in 2020. The penalty for defaulting on payment for that fine is a one-year prison sentence.
Lockwood then asked the court to prepare a warrant so he can serve out his fines as prison time.
