By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: There has been ongoing public discussion on social media regarding the policies of schools, especially regarding the length of students’ hair.
While the Ministry of Education issued a statement saying that all including children are afforded the right to freedom of expression, conscience, and the right to be protected from discrimination, many parents agreed that rules are important.
Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Human Development, Tanya Santos says that rules aren’t a bad thing, they are necessary.
“I attended Belmopan Comprehensive School from 89-93 when Michael Price was principal and we had teachers like Ms. Jennifer Dunn, Alejandro Salazar, and many others who emphatically enforced no-nonsense rules and standards of the school. I was reprimanded on occasion for certain behaviors and ways of dress. I think I turned out pretty well, rules and all. I am certainly grateful that they stayed the course that led us to the path we are on today. My point: rules aren’t a bad thing. They are necessary,” Santos said on Facebook.
Journalist and media personality, Louis Wade also took to social media saying that rules are a part of discipline.
“Why not instead teach your child to abide by an Educational Institution’s Regulations? Don’t you still have summer holidays when your kids can wear whatever hairstyle they want? There IS, after all, a reason why the Police and Military training Academies crew cut every male cadet: DISCIPLINE,” Wade said.
