International News: American accused of human trafficking detained in Honduras

Posted: Wednesday, August 31, 2022. 10:14 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Honduran authorities detained an American accused of human trafficking, the Tico Times reports.

Gary Johnson,63, is believed to be part of a human trafficking gang possibly involved in the abduction of a minor and the disappearance of a university student.

Honduran authorities say that Johnson was holding a 12-year-old girl.

“It is necessary to criminalize the case at hand, in the sense of the man who was arrested with a minor, who is another appendage of a probable gang that is dedicated to human trafficking,” said Security Minister Ramón Sabillón.

Johnson is also linked to the disappearance of Angie Peña, a 23-year-old university student.

Peña left the Roatan beach on January 1 on a jet ski and was never heard from again.

Just days later her jet ski and some of her belongings was discovered on a beach in Belize. Her family suspect that she was kidnapped.

Honduran authorities say that they have found evidence linking him to Pena.
