By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the Taiwan military fired warning shots at drones from China flying over its outposts, the Associated Press reports.
There have been heightened tensions since China claims the self-governing island.
Taiwan says that there have been consistent acts of provocation including military drills following the visit of U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.
A statement by Taiwan’s forces said that the drones were hovering over the Kinmen island group.
Earlier this month, China fired missiles into the sea and sent planes and ships across the dividing line in the Taiwan Strait.
Several allies including the United States, Canada, Belize, and Guatemala have expressed their unwavering support for Taiwan as a democratic self-governing nation.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian says that China will take “strong measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
