By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City family has been spared mandatory prison time for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, as the man who hid the weapon in their home accepted responsibility in court.
Twenty-one-year-old Denzel Estrada appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, alongside his girlfriend, her sister, her mother, and two male relatives, in connection with a .45 caliber pistol found at the family’s home on Kraal Road.
Estrada immediately pleaded guilty to the crime, explaining that the others did not know he had the weapon on the house.
He was sentenced to 3 years in prison, while the prosecution dropped the charges against the other co-accused.
Police went to the house on Tuesday and conducted a search for drugs and firearms, when they found the weapon inside Estrada’s mattress.
