Secretary General of the Central American Economic Integration System visits Belize, meets Foreign Minister Eamon Courtenay, tours Spanish Lookout

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Secretary General of the Central American Economic Integration System (SIECA) Francisco Lima Mena made an official visit to Belize on August 29-30, 2022, according to a press release by the Government of Belize (GOB) Press Office.

“The Secretary-General had a bilateral meeting with Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration, which included discussions on the feasibility of Belize joining SIECA,” said the GOB PressOffice.

“The prospects for Belize to participate in selected elements of SIECA were also discussed, including the Central American Payment System and the Trade Facilitation platform through their 2035 Mobility and Logistics Master Plan.”

The Press Office said Foreign Minister Courtenay and Secretary General Lima Mena reaffirmed their commitment to have Belize pursue a closer participation in SIECA. They also agreed to advocate for closer relations between CARICOM and SIECA.

Lima Mena and his delegation met with members of the Spanish Lookout Chamber of Commerce and visited a number of Belize’s key production facilities, namely, the Quality Poultry Chicken and Western Dairies milk processing plants.

Secretary General Mena discussed economic integration with the National Trade Negotiating Commission. They also reviewed advances in trade facilitation and opportunities for Belize and the private sector with the view of increasing trade relations with Central America.

In his meeting with Secretary General Lima Mena, Minister Courtenay was supported by Ambassador Amalia Mai, Chief Executive Officer for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Jose Apluche, Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala; Andy Sutherland, Director General for Foreign Trade; and other senior trade officials.
