U.S. authorizes COVID-19 booster shots targeting new variants

Posted: Wednesday, August 31, 2022. 9:13 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States authorized its first update to COVID-19 vaccines, booster shots that target the most common omicron strain, the Associated Press reports.

The decision was made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the hope that the modified boosters will increase protection against multiple variants.

COVID-19 vaccines have targeted the original coronavirus strain even as more variants emerged.

The new boosters contain half the original vaccine recipe and half protection against the newest omicron versions, called BA.4 and BA.5, which are considered the most contagious.

Health officials say that the boosters are only for people who have already had their primary vaccinations, using the original vaccines.

The doses made by Pfizer and BioNTech are for those 12 years and older and Moderna’s updated shots are for adults.

The boosters are not to be used for initial vaccinations.
