By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The southwestern city of Chengdu in China with a population of 21 million people is in lockdown due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, the Associated Press reports.
Some 70% of flights have been suspended and residents have been ordered to stay at home.
In addition, the beginning of classes has been delayed.
Public transportation continues to operate and residents are being allowed to leave the city if they can show a special need.
Only 1 member of each family who can show a negative test within the last 24 hours is allowed out per day to buy necessities.
Chengdu has since reported about 1000 cases and no deaths.
The measures reflect China’s rigid adherence to its “zero-COVID” policy that has exacted a major toll on the economy, with lockdowns, business closures and mass testing requirements.
