By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday night, an assailant pointed a loaded gun from close range at Argentina’s Vice President, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner outside her home where crowds had gathered, Reuters report.
The gun failed to discharge and authorities are investigating the motive for the attack.
Today, residents took to the streets in a show of solidarity against the attempt on the Vice President.
Several political leaders, U.S. officials, and Pope Francis have condemned the attack.
“The United States strongly condemns the assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. “We stand with the Argentine government and people in rejecting violence and hate.”
Fernandez de Kirchner is facing potential corruption charges linked to an alleged scheme to divert public funds while president between 2007 and 2015.
However, she denied any wrongdoing and her supporters are rallying to show support.
