Promoters of Yucatec Maya culture honored at Maya Heroes Day Ceremony

Posted: Sunday, September 4, 2022. 8:16 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Two people from the Corozal District were honored this weekend for being vanguards of Yucatec Maya Culture at the 6th annual Maya Heroes Day in Orange Walk.

The event was held by the Northern Maya Association of Belize (NMAB) on Saturday, September 3, at the Battle of Orange Walk monument in Orange Walk Town.

Honored at the event were Fernando Martinez of San Narciso, representing the organization Uil Ixim, and Angelita Magaña from San Joaquin, representing the organization Raices Mexicanas Retoños Belicenas.Martinez was unable to make it to the event due to a health issue.

NMAB Vice-President Arturo Cantun said that the award was “to recognize them for valuable contributions towards the promotion and safeguarding of the Yucatec Maya culture.”

Cantun also explained that the event itself is geared towards raising awareness of the truth of September 1, 1872 — the Battle of Orange Walk where British woodcutters attacked the Maya in Orange Walk to steal their land. He went on to say that the colonial government made the monument to go with a false narrative that the British had valiantly pushed back the Maya while covering the fact that they were driving people from their homes.

The keynote address at the ceremony was given by Governor General of Belize H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam.
