By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Investment team that has been touring Southern Belize on Monday visited Marie Sharp’s Fine Foods and Silk Grass Farms.

“I recognized Mrs. Narda Garcia- CEO of Investment in my Office and the Investment Policy and Compliance Unit as they continue the work of supporting our entrepreneurs and investors with a fact-finding tour,” noted Prime Minister John Briceño in a social media post.

Marie Sharp’s Fine Foods Ltd has been exporting its products, including its top-of-the-line habanero pepper sauce, to the United States, Canada, Japan, and Germany, said the Prime Minister.

“Hot pepper production has increased from 236,000 pounds in 2019 to 642,000 pounds in 2021, while production for 2022 is projected at 710,000 pounds. This tripling of production is for new markets coming online with the inclusion now of South America,” he said.

Marie Sharp is pumping US$4 million into its factory to increase processing capacity from 90 bottles to 200 bottles per minute. At present, the company employs 60 factory workers, mostly women, and gives business to over 70 farmers in the Stann Creek District, said the Prime Minister.

He noted that the Investment Team’s second stop was Silk Grass Farms.

“Silk Grass Farms is investing $60 million in the production and value addition of coconut products such as coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk, and other by-products, with a new factory designed and to be built by Belizean technicians,” wrote Prime Minister Briceño.

Silk Grass Farms, which employs more than 200 workers, also processes fruits and vegetables into various value-added products, he said.

Garcia and the Investment team, which includes representatives from the Investment Policy and Compliance Unit, have also visited three agro-processing facilities, namely TexBel Processors Limited, BelEuro Aquaculture, and Copal Tree Distillery in Southern Belize. They have also toured the Maya heartland visiting Belize Crafts Limited, makers of Maya Bags, the Mahogany Chocolate Factory in Punta Gorda, and the Toledo Cacao Growers Association (TCGA) in Mafredi.
