Belize City man convicted of drug trafficking fined $1,500

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man, convicted of drug trafficking was given a fine instead of a custodial sentence this week.

Twenty-six-year-old Brandon Bailey appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, answering a charge of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another, with respect to 166 grams (roughly 1/3 of a pound) of marijuana found in his possession.

In court, Bailey pleaded guilty to the offense, and given the quick guilty plea and the fact that it was his first offense for drug trafficking, he was fined $1,500.

Bailey has until December 30 to pay the fine or he will spend a year in prison for default.

Police went to Bailey’s home on September 5 to conduct a search and asked him if he had anything to declare before they began.

He told them he had some marijuana in a barrel which he pointed out to the police. When the officers searched the barrel they found $626.85 cash in US and Belize currency, along with two coffee bottles and a plastic bag containing marijuana.
