Hurricane Earl could become a major hurricane; Bermuda under tropical storm warning

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) say that Hurricane Earl could become a major hurricane this week.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Bermuda.

On the forecast track, the center of Earl is expected to pass to the southeast of Bermuda late Thursday and Thursday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (135 km/h) with higher gusts. Earl is forecast to become a major hurricane with winds stronger than 120 miles per hour by the end of this week.

Tropical storm conditions are expected in Bermuda beginning Thursday afternoon.

Swells generated by Earl are expected to reach Bermuda by tonight and the U.S. east coast shortly thereafter. The swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions through the weekend.
