Independence Poly Clinic to host first-ever suicide prevention flag-raising ceremony

By Benjamin Flowers: The Independence Poly Clinic is teaming up with the Mental Health Department to host its first-ever flag-raising ceremony in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD).

The event takes place at 10:00 a.m. on September 9, at the Triangular Park in Independence Village.

The clinic said that the event is geared at spreading awareness on the issue of suicide and showing support to survivors as well as those contemplating suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated annually on September 10. The event is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The 2022 theme for “Creating hope through action,” is used to reflect the need for collective action to address suicide as an urgent public health issue. The day is also used to promote stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self-harm and suicide through preventative action.

“All of us- family members, friends, co-workers, community members, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, political officials, and governments can take action to prevent suicide in the Region,” the WHO said.
