Mother overcome with grief gives tearful testimony of boat explosion that killed her two daughters at boat captain’s trial

By Breaking Belize News Staff: On May 5, 2019, an explosion on a passenger boat bound for Caye Caulker killed two children, sisters aged 8 and 10 years old. This week, the mother of those children gave a tearful recount of the events as she testified before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

The trial against San Pedro Water Jets International and boat captain Ernest Delgado continued on Tuesday, with prosecutor Darrell Bradley calling a number of witnesses including Delon Castro, the electrician from Port of Belize who testified that the explosion was caused by a fault in the boat, which did not have a gauge to detect such a fault, as well as witnesses and victims of the explosion.

Among the witnesses was Xaibe Village Rosa Catch, mother of Kimberly Guy, 8, Yamri Guy, 10, who were at ground zero for the explosion. In court, Catch broke down in tears as she explained to the court how the other passengers left the boat after the explosion but she stayed behind to pick up the bodies of her daughters. Kimberly died on the spot, while Yamri died undergoing treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Joseph Lee, an American visiting Belize for the very first time and taking a trip to Caye Caulker, also testified that he received severe burns from the incident which rendered him unable to work for a month.

The prosecution is expected to close its case today, after the testimony of four more witnesses. Attorney Mark Williams, representing the company and the boat captain will then deliver their defense.
