‘Peppa Pig’ cartoon introduces 1st same-sex couple for children’s show

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The London-based, ‘Peppa Pig’ cartoon loved by many toddlers and pre-schoolers has introduced its first same-sex parent family.

The episode entitled “Families” aired on Tuesday in London. It featured 2 polar bear mommies, according to CNN.

Peppa’s classmate Penny Polar Bear talks about her 2 mommies and what makes each special.

In addition, Penny said, “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mommy and my other mommy. One mommy is a doctor and one mommy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

Viewers were divided on the new episode, many welcomed inclusion while others did not support the introduction of the same-sex couple.

‘Peppa Pig’ is broadcast in 180 countries including Belize. The cartoon has become a global phenomenon since it burst, oinking, onto screens in 2004.

And in 2019, a petition was launched for the writers of the cartoon to include a same-sex parent family, to make it more inclusive for all children.

The petition attracted more than 23,000 signatures.
