King Charles III: ‘The greatest sadness for me and all members of my family’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “The death of my beloved mother Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” said King Charles III in a statement following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1927, Queen Elizabeth II died at 96 years of age after being the longest serving monarch. She was the Queen of England for 70 years from 1952 when her father King George VI died.

According to the BBC, King Charles said during the period of mourning he and his family would be “comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held”.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” said a statement from Buckingham Palace in London. The Queen was at Balmoral Castle near Aberdeen in Scotland when she passed away.

“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” said the statement from Buckingham.

Queen Elizabeth took ill earlier on Thursday and was under medical supervision. The world knew it was serious when news came that her family was traveling to Balmoral Castle in Scotland to be with her.

The BBC quoted Prime Minister Liz Truss, who the Queen appointed on Tuesday, saying Queen Elizabeth “provided us with the stability and strength that we needed”.
