Minister of Education praises “Queen of Belize’s” service, suggests we move away from monarchy

Queen Elizabeth

By Aaron Humes: Elizabeth II was by law and by right also Queen of Belize as she was of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms at the time of her passing this afternoon, UK time.

Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Francis Fonseca, this morning before her passing, reflected on her contribution to the world, the Commonwealth and Belize across her long life. Fonseca was twice appointed to Her Majesty’s Service in the Government of Belize and once a Leader of Her Most Loyal Opposition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family. We wish The Queen well. She has had a long, productive life. I think in her lifetime she has received 15 British Prime Ministers and all of our Prime Ministers of Belize have served under her tenure, her leadership, so she is the ceremonial head of State of Belize, she is the Queen of Belize. And so, regardless of your views on the monarchy…that does not take away from our fondness for the Queen. I believe she has served the Commonwealth with distinction and with grace.”

Fonseca added that Belizeans understand the significant impact she has had and pay tribute to her long service.

Nonetheless, he shared his personal views that “I believe we should move beyond the monarchy; we should put behind us the vestiges of colonialism once and for all,” while maintaining that to do so is not to look down on The Queen’s record.
