By Aaron Humes: The Queen is dead, long live the King, goes the traditional phrase signifying the transition to a new monarch of either gender.

But one place where Queen Elizabeth’s face remains, at least for now, is on our coins and bills, where they have been since she ascended to the throne in the mid-1950s.

According to Time Magazine, the Queen’s portrait has graced currency in 33 countries from Australia to Trinidad, with 26 different portraits being used, from the age of nine in 1935 in Canada, to advancing years.

Belize last updated its currency in 2003 with the addition of new security features and an updated portrait of the Queen, although in 1980 the redesign used a portrait that was already 20 years old.

The Central Bank Act gives the Bank the sole right to issue notes and coins in Belize and therefore to design and change them. Once issued they remain legal tender until they are “demonetized,” that is, taken out of circulation.

At some point the new King’s portrait may appear, or those of others, or perhaps an entirely new design. The Bank, curiously, does not pay much attention to the Queen as a feature on the bills and coins it introduces.

But no need to worry, your money is still good and remains so until the Central Bank says otherwise.
