Belize and St. Vincent declare mourning for Queen Elizabeth’s death

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have declared mourning following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II was 96 years old and was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

She ascended to the throne in 1952 and, in June, celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years as Queen.

“Her seven decades as Queen and Head of the Commonwealth can best be described as remarkable in the midst of these turbulent times. Her life of faithful service will never be forgotten by Belizeans, especially those involved in the scouting movement which she served as patron,” a statement from the Government of Belize said.

“The Office of the Prime Minister further informs the nation that as a sign of utmost respect and in expression of deepest condolences, the nation will observe an official period of mourning during this time,” it added.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines said “Her Majesty has had a long reign, a woman of dignity, a head of state who kept stability for the British in the United Kingdom and who as head of the Commonwealth particularly made important contributions towards the advancement of democracy and decolonization of former British colonies”.
