By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize signed two economic Memorandums of Understanding with Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Thursday.

“Yesterday along with Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Jose Abelardo Mai and Hon. Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Christopher Coye, I visited the Free Zone in Chetumal and signed two (2) MOU’s – between the Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico del Gobierno del Estado de Quintana Roo (The Quintana Roo Ministry of Economic Development) and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment and the second between the Chetumal Industrial Park and the Corozal Free Zone,” said the Prime Minister John Briceño in a social media post.

The Governor of Quintana Roo Carlos Manuel Joaquín González signed on behalf of the neighbouring Mexican State of Quintana Roo.

“The MOUs will allow for the promotion of investments and to develop a joint platform to facilitate international investment and trade between that Mexican region and Belize,” said Prime Minister Briceño.

According to the Government of Belize Press Office, the agreement between the two ministries will establish a formal framework for inter-organizational technical cooperation and coordination, which will facilitate the implementation of activities to generate opportunities for investment and business; to jointly develop regional investment programs and policies; to promote investment opportunities through trade fairs, meetings, and exhibitions; and to promote cooperation in training and education for greater capacity building between institutions.

The Press Office said agreement between the Corozal Free Zone and the Chetumal Industrial Park will facilitate collaboration between the two investment schemes and attract investment and markets.

“These MOUs will open the door for more meaningful business collaboration between the private sectors of both parties, facilitating easier information-sharing and providing greater business opportunities within a short time,” said the Government of Belize Press Office.

“These opportunities will range from tourism and cultural exchange to agro-industry, education, customs services and many more important business-related activities that closely link Belize and Quintana Roo.”

Belize and Quintana Roo have maintained cordial and fruitful relations over the years. Being a border state and the Mexican dollar giving good returns, Belizeans flock to the Quintana Roo capital of Chetumal and neighbouring towns in great numbers every year.
