Today marks the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US

By Benjamin Flowers: Today marks 21 years since the terrorist attacks in the United States that resulted in the deaths of almost 3,000 people.

The attacks were said to have been conducted by 19 jihadists that hijacked four passenger planes and used kamikaze style against their targets.

Two of the planes were used to destroy the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City, one was flown into the Pentagon building in Washington DC, and the fourth plane crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania after passengers reportedly altered its flight path at the cost of their own lives.

The attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 people, including the 265 passengers in the four planes. Of those that died in the attacks, 2,753 of them died in the WTC, meanwhile, 184 were killed in the Pentagon attack. Additionally, over 6,000 people were injured to varying degrees in the attacks.

ABC News reports that 343 firefighters died that day, and in the years that have followed a comparable number died from illnesses contracted while conducting rescue efforts at the WTC site.

Rescue and clean-up crews took nine months to haul away a total of 1.8 million tons of wreckage from the WTC site alone.

In September 2011, on the 10th anniversary attacks the 9/11 Memorial & Museum was inaugurated at the WTC site which features twin waterfall pools surrounded by bronze parapets that list the names of the victims of the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The pools are set within a plaza where more than 400 swamp white oak trees grow.

According to the United States Embassy in Belmopan, a Belizean woman, Alva Jeffries Sanchez was among those who died that day. She was working on the 96th floor of tower 1 when the plane struck.
