By Aaron Humes: While an internal investigation by Professional Standards Branch is underway, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says the officer accused of shooting Rondane Swaso, 22, off Euphrates Avenue last week, is not suspected at this time of violating the Police Department policy.
Police received information of a case of handling stolen goods and participated in a meeting between the complainant and accused on East Canal, the Commissioner revealed.
When Police moved in to make the arrest, Williams said, the accused tried to fight the officer for his weapon, then fled.
Police set chase and tracked the accused to an abandoned lot next to the basketball court on Euphrates Avenue. As the officer was calling for backup, the accused appeared and tried to grab his weapon.
The officer shot Swaso once in the torso, the bullet exiting through his back.
Swaso remains hospitalized and will face criminal charges. Investigations continue on both the criminal and internal front.
