International News: Dominican Republic’s (DR) President Luis Abinader bans Haitian Foreign Minister Claude Joseph from entering the DR

Posted: Monday, September 12, 2022. 11:19 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has banned the Foreign Minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph from entering the DR as tensions rise between the two nations.

Abinader issued the ban last Wednesday, as part of a broader series of restrictions that bar 12 Haitian gang leaders from entering the Dominican Republic. The explanation for the ban was that the individuals named pose a threat to the DR’s national security.

Joseph, who has also served as interim President and Prime Minister, said he welcomed the ban, in the name of Haitian revolutionary icons Dessalines, Toussaint, and Christophe.

In November 2021, Joseph had publicly said that the Dominican Republic was “unsafe”, a statement that angered officials in the Dominican Republic and put further strain on relations between the countries, which had already been turbulent.

The situation is made worse, as rising poverty and violence in Haiti, has caused many Haitians to flee to the Dominican Republic seeking a better life.
