It is the peak of the hurricane season; storm names Fiona and Gaston could be used soon

Posted: Tuesday, September 13, 2022. 3:01 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Atlantic Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 each year with the season peaking in September, Yahoo reports.

The first few months of this year’s hurricane season have been a bit quiet and  Hurricane Danielle was the first hurricane to appear in 2022 while Hurricane Earl arrived shortly afterward.

Since 1953, names have been used for tropical storms and hurricanes and they have been used in case two storms happen at the same time, so people aren’t confused or misled.

A storm gets named when it has sustained winds of 39 mph.

A storm becomes a hurricane when it reaches winds of 74 mph.

Below are the tropical storm and hurricane names for 2022:

    Alex

    Bonnie

    Colin

    Danielle

    Earl

    Fiona

    Gaston

    Hermine

    Ian

    Julia

    Karl

    Lisa

    Martin

    Nicole

    Owen

    Paula

    Richard

    Shary

    Tobias

    Virginie

    Walter

A name will be retired “if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity,” according to the World Meteorological Organization.
