By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Hattieville resident charged with drug trafficking was cleared in court today after the defense showed major errors in the testimony of the police.
Thirty-four-year-old Alex Lewis, was charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another, with respect to 122 grams of marijuana police allegedly found at his home during a bust on January 3, 2018.
The prosecution’s three police witnesses testified that they went to a house in the New Site area of Hattieville and when they got there, Lewis ran through the backdoor of the house in an attempt to dispose of the drugs, which were later discovered.
Lewis disputed the police version of the events, saying that police came and questioned him about another man suspected of drug trafficking. However, he claims that when he did not have an answer they wanted to hear, they decided to charge him. Lewis’ attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, called a witness who was able to prove to the court that the house police claimed they saw Lewis running through, does not have a back door, bringing the integrity of their testimony into question.
With that, the magistrate ruled in Lewis’ favor and acquitted him of the charge.
