“Parade mishap was a distraction from the award ceremony,” says Police Commissioner

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is asking the public to shift their focus from the police officer’s coordination mishap during the award ceremony on Tuesday, back to the purpose of the event.

Williams said that the fault of the miscoordination during the march was the fault of the parade commander who issued a wrong command.

“As a society, we have allowed that little mishap to overshadow the fact that over 300 police officers were awarded for exemplary service to this country,” Williams said.

He noted that the parade commander should have ordered the group to turn left instead of right and that the officers who made the wrong turn did so because they knew that the command was supposed to be left.

Williams also stressed that the parade commander has since apologized for his mistake, and asked that the public be mindful that police officers are human beings and as such are prone to making mistakes.

At the ceremony, there were 175 long service medals, 72 first clasp medals, 24-second clasp medals, 19 meritorious service medals, and 6 Distinguished Service medals.
