Tropical Storm Fiona could form soon in the Atlantic

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are closely monitoring a tropical depression that formed today over the Tropical Atlantic.

The NHC says that interests in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico should monitor the progress of this system.

On the forecast track, the center of the system is forecast to move through the Leeward Islands on Friday or Friday night, and be near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts.

Some gradual strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and the depression is forecast to become tropical storm Fiona tonight or Thursday.

The public is reminded to be alert and prepared.
