By Aaron Humes: The sudden and tragic death of eight-year-old Mercedes Campos of Lords’ Bank, Belize District sent shockwaves across the nation. She was knocked down while walking with her family at the corner of Poinsettia Street in Ladyville and the Philip Goldson Highway a month ago.
While her family has been plunged into grief that will never go away, the story impacted Belizeans living abroad, including the owners of Al Sea Breeze in Los Angeles, California.
They contacted long-standing activist and advocate Geovannie Brackett to see how they could provide assistance to Mercedes’ surviving family. With his help, they have sent a barrel full of items which he delivered on Monday on their behalf to the grieving family.
According to Brackett, “No amount of tears or goods will heal the pain and salve the loss, but it is hoped that this gesture will reaffirm the good in all of us and serve as a reminder that Mercedes has not been forgotten.”
The barrel was humbly received by Mercedes’ mother Alba Guevara, one of her sisters, and another relative, who is now living in the Belama area.
The driver, Elias Reynoso, has been charged and awaits prosecution.
