By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: He is a millennial leader and despite criticism for his leadership styles, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has announced that he will seek re-election in 2024.

On the country’s Independence day, September 15, Bukele announced that he will seek re-election, despite the constitution prohibiting presidents from having consecutive terms, Reuters report.

“I’m announcing to the Salvadoran people that I’ve decided to run as a candidate for president of the republic,” Bukele said.

“Developed countries have re-election. And thanks to the new configuration of the democratic institution of our country, now El Salvador will too,” he added.

Although the constitution forbids a president from being re-elected immediately after a term in office, the Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that a second consecutive term was allowed.

Shortly after the ruling, the U.S. State Department said it marked a decline in democratic governance that damaged its relationship with the Central American country.

Several polls show that Bukele enjoys high approval ratings and his recent crackdown on gangs is highly supported.

Many human rights groups have called on Bukele to respect the human rights and dignity of those being detained.
