Ministry of Infrastructure Development issues road safety advisory tips for Belize’s Independence Day Celebrations

Contributed: During this celebratory season, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH) advises the public to exercise extreme caution when traveling along the Philip Goldson Highway, particularly between miles 24.5 in Biscayne Village and the Santa Elena/Mexico Border.

Several active construction zones are within this portion of the road as part of the Philip Goldson Highway and Remate Upgrading Project.

The MIDH, and contractors Teichroeb and Sons Ltd. and CISCO Construction Ltd., appeal to all road users to be alert, drive with the utmost care, specifically through active work areas, and respect all road construction signs and workers contributing to the upgrade of the Philip Goldson Highway.

Drivers are reminded that whether driving alone or with passengers, they are responsible for their safety and that of other road users and should:

1. Drive within the legal and posted speed limits
2. ALWAYS use seatbelts
3. Not drink and drive
4. Not use a cellphone while driving
5. Overtake only when the road ahead is clear
6. Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you to ensure you are able to stop if necessary safely
7. Ensure using proper light indicators (left or right) correctly
8. Reduce speed at night and ensure headlights are working properly
