Fiona becomes third hurricane for the 2022 hurricane season; Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic in its path

By Benjamin Flowers: Tropical Storm Fiona is officially Hurricane Fiona and is headed for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Both countries have hurricane warnings issued to them earlier today, as the storm is expected to make landfall between tonight and tomorrow morning.

Forecasters say that Fiona, a Category 1 hurricane, has sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and could bring potentially life-threatening rains and mudslides.

The storm is expected to arrive on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic tonight and Monday, and near or to the east of the Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday.

Puerto Rico is expecting to receive between 12-16 inches of rainfall in some areas and as much as 25 inches in others. Storge surges of up to three feet are expected.

Fiona is the third hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
