Catastrophic Hurricane Fiona causes power outage in Puerto Rico

Posted: Monday, September 19, 2022. 9:54 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, a Category 1Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico causing power outages, flooding, and landslides, Reuters reported.

There were reports of flooding, and landslides and Fiona also swept away a major bridge.

The storm prompted airports to close, swamped cars, and dumped rain in such quantities that some rivers were rising 20 feet in just hours.

Puerto Rico Governor, Pedro Pierluisi said that the storm was “catastrophic”.

Officials say that power in some parts of the country had been restored by Sunday night, however, it would take days for the entire island to get back power.

As Fiona moves toward the Dominican Republic, forecasts say that torrential rains and mudslides were also expected.

Last night, agencies in the Dominican Republic began evacuating residents from high-risk areas.

U.S. President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for Puerto Rico authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief and provide emergency protective measures.
