International News: U.S. President Joe Biden says the U.S. would defend Taiwan if China attacks

Posted: Monday, September 19, 2022. 11:04 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President, Joe Biden said today that the United States would step in and defend Taiwan if China attacks, BBC reports.

When asked during a CBS interview if US troops would defend Taiwan, Biden said, “Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.”

Shortly after, the White House said that the official US policy – which doesn’t commit to military action on Taiwan – had not changed.

Beijing said it “deplores and firmly opposes” Biden’s pledge of action.

There have been heightened tensions since China claims the self-governing island.

And, tensions between the U.S. and China, over Taiwan have ramped up following visits of high U.S. officials to the island last month including the visit of House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

Washington adhered to the One China policy in which the US acknowledges that there is only one Chinese government, and has formal ties with Beijing rather than Taiwan.

However, the U.S. maintains close relations with Taiwan and sells arms to it under the Taiwan Relations Act, which states that the US must provide the island with the means to defend itself.
