Torrential rains from Hurricane Fiona continue to affect Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic

Posted: Monday, September 19, 2022. 10:11 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) say that torrential rains from Hurricane Fiona will continue to affect Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

On the forecast track, the center of Fiona will move over the eastern portion of the Dominican Republic during the next few hours and emerge over the southwestern Atlantic this afternoon. The center is forecast to pass near or to the east of the Turks and Caicos on Tuesday.

Fiona is a powerful category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts.

Some strengthening is expected during the next few days after the hurricane emerges over the southwestern Atlantic, and Fiona is forecast to become a major hurricane by Wednesday.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Puerto Rico.

These rains caused by Fiona will continue to produce life-threatening and catastrophic flooding along with mudslides and landslides across Puerto Rico.

Life-threatening flash and urban flooding are likely for eastern portions of the Dominican Republic, the NHC noted.
